The snowy weather in Southern Ontario continued while Ricky and I went on our first trip together to visit his grandparents in Jamaica. I had never imagined how one's childhood might be like in Montego Bay, but now having seen it in person, I can sort of picture part of his life through this place. The beaches, sun and loads of tropical fruit would have made little me pretty happy.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-11593799282253492372013-12-16T10:39:00.001-05:002013-12-16T10:39:10.012-05:00{Seoul} City Adventures

I have never been to Seoul before this trip, so it seemed natural for me to stay a few more days after the installation was completed; this way I can explore the city a little bit. The way the city has preserved the heritage buildings fascinated me, because unlike Beijing, the palace is quite humble in Seoul. Its walls are lower, and the paint less shiny. When walking in Insa-dong, one can also see traditional houses juxtaposed immediately next to modern galleries. It makes a very interesting walk. My mind was traveling through time as my eyes wandered on the street. The rest of Seoul seemed quite homogeneous--condos and office buildings make up most of its urban fabric. The major streets are four to six lane wide, making it very difficult for the pedestrians to cross. Though when I turned the corner and find myself in a neighborhood lined with little stores and cozy cafes, the scale of the city suddenly changed. I felt comfortable and the city around me seemed tangible and relevant to my tiny body.
I've put my Thesis aside since October to work full time on organizing the ACADIA conference that happened at the architecture school at the end of October. As soon as the conference was over, I packed my bags and boarded a plane with the rest of the Philip Beesley team to put together an installation sculpture at the MMCA Seoul. We got over the jetlag pretty quickly because having very little sleep prior to traveling half way across the world helps with adjusting one's sleep schedule.

For the first 13 days while in Seoul, we climbed scaffolds, assembled glass chains, put together spars and fiddled with electronics. Although we spent most of our time in the museum, we've gotten to see glimpses of the Korean experience--we dined on the floor and watched a shaman performance to say the least. With many many wonderful hands and help, the installation turned out incredible. You can see more pictures of it here. P.S. I heard it will be on the December issue of Korean Vogue!
I always complained that every time I went to a cottage it would be raining, but not this time. We spent the most beautiful summer weekend at Geoff's farm back in July. The water was warm and the dock was very well utilized as a hub for sun bathing, reading and great company.

As the leaves are changing colours these days, I can only reminisce the hot summer we've had. I'm looking forward to the fall. Hikes and layered clothes in this weather especially make me excited.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-16366632911992254352013-09-02T10:20:00.000-04:002013-09-17T23:32:28.678-04:00{Roxton Road Parks} Monday, after rain visit

the rain might give me a little more clue as to where the Garrison creek used
to run through. Maybe there is a slight depression throughout the park that
marks the creek’s past life. This was not the case. I walked around the park
trying to make note and differentiate the various ground conditions. Sure some
areas are wetter than others but they come in patches. The ground of the east
side of the park was generally moister than the west side. This was probably
only due to the natural slope of the site. The areas under the trees didn’t dry
as fast as those that situated in a clearing. These all made perfect sense to
me. The only thing that puzzled me was that I found a few puddles of water in
muddy dirt on and next to the X shaped paths crossing the park. This may be
because of the soil in these areas don’t drain as well and water tends to build
up. Another speculation of mine is that the path cutting from the southwest to
the northeast corner of the park may be following the previous course of the
Garrison Creek. Looking at the creek diagram shown on the Toronto Lost Rivers
website, this speculation may very well be true.

I was on a mission this afternoon. I had planned to work on my thesis abstract while enjoying a fine cup of coffee in a hip coffee shop, but to much of my disappointment, I forgot my wallet. What's better than coffee in a fine afternoon I thought? A walk in the park and neighborhood I'm so invested in would be pretty lovely. With my film camera in hand this time, I decided to walk west from the park this time. Crossing over George Ban Park, a saw a humble playground right across Ossington Avenue. As I approached it, the building next to it appeared to be a school. I later found out on Google it's the Ossington Junior Public School. I followed a side path between the end of the row houses and the playground and found myself in the back of the school in a lush school garden. There are small plots of gardens next to the school building, and across from those is a series of stepped gardens with a variety of vegetables neatly planted and labeled--kale, cauliflower, tomatoes and many of which I could not name. Turning a corner I found the space opened up and there are more stepped gardens to my left. To my right are the backyards of houses and in the middle of this open space situate another playground. The school seems quite; I guess it is because of the summer break, though the gardens are kept very well.
The Friends of Roxton Road Parks (FoRRP) is hosting a block party at the park today so I thought I would check it out and walk around the neighbourhood. People seemed to be still setting up when I parked my bike this morning, so I headed into the laneways first to see the backyards of the community. I entered an alley perpendicular and just east to the park, ahead of me was an intersection. The path in north-south direction seemed to be newly paved. The asphalt was a light grey colour with near perfect surface texture. I turned left and after about 40 steps I was soon faced with a long single storey red brick wall. At the time, I thought it belonged to a warehouse but later realized that was the back wall of the 24-hour Metro on College St. The laneway next to the wall is a wide one--at least 8 meters in width. The paving here is not as nice, you can see the cracks and the occasional weeds growing out of them. I turned my way back onto the newly paved laneway--6 meters wide with garages lining both side of the road--this is a standard laneway setup. There are the occasional push-backs from the lane that reveal people's backyards. In these cases, garages have been removed and cars park either in a porch or simply on the driveway. Some car garages have been converted into studios or have studio/offices added onto the second floor. These are sort of the start of the laneway housing typology that Bridgett Shim and Donald Chong studied extensively in Site Unseen Since garages are usually built as non-conditioned spaces, most laneway studios have to rely on window air conditioners. Thought, I wonder how bearable it is to work there in the winter.

One thing I was very happy and a bit surprised to discover was how much people have grown produce in their backyards. Many families has trellises set up for grape vines. I suppose they also function as really great backyard shading in the summer. Tomatoes is a common plant to grow around here as well. Some gardens are filled with plants and I can hardly distinguish them all. One has has a large corner lot where the laneway turns the corner and the house was setback from the side lane leaving a generous space for their a garden. It is filled with Zucchini plants. The large fan like leaves cover much of the plot and hide the zucchini fruits within. I didn't see many flower gardens, but instead, flowers sprung from pavement cracks and between where curbs and paving meet. They are mostly wild daisies and dandelions. They have been spurts of nice discoveries as I continued my morning walk.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-27699725053601384932013-08-07T18:56:00.000-04:002013-08-07T19:07:51.948-04:00Day trip to Macau
I'm still back logging here, but this post will conclude my June travel photos!
This trip to Macau was totally spontaneous. I decided to take a day-trip on my own the very night before I boarded the ferry from Hong Kong. When I arrived, I went straight to the bus terminal only to realize I had no idea what I wanted to see let alone which bus to take. I took many detours and received many generous pointers to finally get to the city centre in the afternoon. Macau is quite small, and I was able to explore the town on foot. Though, the weather was not on my side--it had thunderstormed all day and my feet were just soaking in my wet keds since early morning. My complains are only part of the story, and the truth is...I really enjoyed this adventure on my own. I've never entertained the idea to travel to a foreign place on my own, but this is a start, maybe I can backpack for a couple of days on my own next? Baby steps :)Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-86542401108777215282013-08-05T12:00:00.000-04:002013-08-20T15:44:42.698-04:00{Roxton Road Parks} Monday, first visitI'm starting a new series here to to track personal observations of my thesis site--a park located in Toronto's Little Italy. I plan to visit the park at least once a week for the month of August and September, While I'm there I'll document my experience with photos and words. I tend to ramble on when writing in my notebook, so I will only post excerpts here along with the photos. Here are the bits of the first one.

I settled at the picnic table under the trees, took out my Annie Dillar book to read for the rest of the afternoon. It is interesting to read her book in open air--the rustling leaves and quiet breeze set good mood for the read. I'm a slow reader and I get distracted too easily. As soon as I sensed movement around me, my eyes wondered and my train of thoughts quickly shifted to notice my surroundings in order to satisfy my curious heart. As I lifted my eyes away from the book, I saw a little sparrow landed on my picnic table, only about six inches away from me. I thought sparrows are easily startled, but not this one. It hopped two steps towards me, looked down as if it was checking on my reading progress, then it quickly flew off but landed on the other edge of the table right beside my arm. With it's tilted head again, it's attention seemed to be on what was going on below the table--on the grass. I was not a hundred percent for certain if it was the same sparrow, but the bird came back a few more times, staying for about half a minute each and hanging out really close to me. I was happy someone was interested in what I was doing, but I was distracted and needed to get back to my reading.

As it was getting too windy and cold under the shades, I started rubbing my two arms and debated whether or not to relocated again, maybe this time to a half sunny and half shaded spot, this way I can easily oscillate between the two and find a good balance in temperature. While I was pondering on my options, I noticed a tiny bright yellow dot between the pages of my book. It was crawling in a slow pace and I could see its hair thin legs wobbling on the page. Its body is very yellow, almost the same colour as a lemon's skin. I have never seen a bug of this colour before. There is this South American bug called Cochineal that I learnt about when I tried natural dye in a studio. It is a bug that has has bright pink guts, so they grind them up and use them as a dye. I wonder if this bug may have yellow guts, and it may sound cruel but I imagine the colour would be quite beautiful.
I went to Hong Kong with a mission, and that is to explore all of its pedestrian layers. While researching for my thesis, I became very interested in the layering of urban infrastructures that stack up the city in a vertical fashion. In the extremely dense city of Hong Kong, these elevated and underground pedestrian networks make up a large part of the city's transportation infrastructure, and they facilitate not only safe and conditioned passages but also act as another layer of public space that often hosts political demonstrations and leisurely activities.

If you might be interested in exploring Hong Kong in a similar way, I would recommend looking at this unconventional travel guide--Cities Without Ground: A Hong Kong GuidebookMayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-39817819115688420172013-07-08T23:40:00.000-04:002013-07-08T23:40:12.648-04:00HongKong - the First Day

On the first day of my trip in HongKong I was already getting an overview of what the city has to show me. From hiking to the Peak to exploring the dense neighbourhood of Mon Kok, my day was packed with surprises. With it's mega towers and intimate neighbourhoods, this city is overwhelmingly unique. More on that later :)Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-83549297035397663562013-07-04T23:39:00.004-04:002013-07-04T23:42:41.398-04:00Central Beijing's Hutongs

Photos from late May, on a stroll in central Beijing with a dear friend I've known since kindergarten. Exploring hutongs, alleyways and tourist destinations, we were amazed by the amount of history that's been layered onto the city. My eyes kept on wondering to find interesting spots and objects, but I'm sure every visit feels different for everyone, and the next time I walk by, I will discover new exciting things.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-86926598093616890392013-03-10T11:51:00.000-04:002013-03-10T12:03:32.255-04:00Spring Forward

A day trip to Niagara on the Lake back in February, when the wind was still chilly and mittens were absolutely essential for taking photos outdoors. Although I enjoy the snow covered winter scenes, I am so happy to see extended hours of daylight. Can't wait for spring outings.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-34990820590151230142013-02-26T19:02:00.001-05:002013-02-26T19:02:07.956-05:00Square Roll

The last time I posted Diana Mini photos was almost two years ago, but lately I've been carrying this tiny camera with me while traveling. This roll followed me to Beijing, Nantong, Toronto and Quebec City. It had stayed in my camera for so long and I've almost forgotten what I've taken, but all the good memories of my travels were brought back when I opened the envelope. I always find nice surprises going through these square prints.

I noticed that this blog is constantly evolving as different stages of my life take shape and unfolds. Since starting grad school, I've been involved in some really cool projects, and the posts here may be more school/architecture related than anything else from now on.

At the end of last year, I was invited to participate in an ice installation at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec. I was fortunate enough to be working close colleagues from Waterloo as well as some really amazing people from the Bartlett. Our design involved casted ice panels as structural modules to create a self-supporting ice sculpture. Because Quebec City warmed up so much a few days before our installation, we had to work in a freezer trailer truck in -20 temperature. It was quite the experience. Luckily temperature dropped to -15 the day we started piecing things together, and after a very frustrating night with very little sleep everything worked and the installation was magically standing on its own just like the way we had imagined.

We spent a week in Quebec City but I only managed to take a few lomo photos of the actual place, hopefully I will get those developed soon.

Happy new year to all of you! I haven't been very diligent with blogging, something about winter just makes me really lazy..Over the holidays, I went on a trip to Beijing to attend my dearest friend Chelsea's wedding. I've known Chelsea since the first day of 10th grade, and Darren since 11th grade, so I ought to be the 3rd happiest person to see the two of them finally tying the knot after being together for 9 years!

Last year when I visited LA, I had the intention to take a few engagement photos for them. I wasn't the most comfortable under my skin with a camera at hand, since I had never done such thing on my own. We took photos in downtown LA with the warmest sunshine and shared a great time, but I decided I wasn't very happy with them when I returned home. I never took another look at them until I got back from their wedding. This time, I had realized maybe I was a little too judgmental of myself. Although they're not the best images out there, they're sincere representations of their relationship and love for each other.

I'm glad I decided to give this set of photos another chance, and after a few tweaks, I think I'm quite happy with the way they are.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-48967967457975116962012-11-02T13:01:00.002-04:002012-11-02T13:02:35.929-04:00animated space
Russell and I moved to Cambridge (Ontario) in September, and I had since then started my masters program in architecture. Russell coped well with his first move I think. He hid in the tub for two hours, and from there on he learned to love his expanded kingdom. Somehow he figured out how to open drawers, so I've caught him sleeping in my scarf drawer a couple times, cracks me up every time.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-57713646792285788072012-08-16T23:06:00.000-04:002012-08-16T23:10:07.666-04:00Open Eyes Toronto

Last Thursday a bunch of us put up a little show and tell at CSI Annex and we had a fantastic turn out. There were photographs, a tall bike, 3D printing and even tap dancing! I've been playing around with origami tessellation this summer and decided to make a lamp shade with a pattern on Eric Gjerde's book. I was so excited when my talented friends Biying and Matt asked me to photograph their new jewelry line. What's so unique about them you ask? Back in May, I received a really fantastic birthday gift, which at that time was a just a bunch of scrabble pieces. After spending half of my dinner time to unscramble the letters, I realized my friends all chipped in to get me a new ride! I never would have expected such a gift, but I was ecstatic when I found out! I always say I have the best friends and families, and it's so very true!Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-7032584436163161082012-07-03T23:29:00.000-04:002012-07-03T23:30:41.502-04:00Camping

Believe it or not, this is my first camping trip. I'm not so found of bugs, darkness and the lack of water, but everything about this trip made all of the above seemed negligible. Our days were filled with canoeing, cooking and eating. Brunch in the wilderness is the best thing.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8267350640044910456.post-33709221716782525692012-06-12T22:35:00.000-04:002012-06-12T22:41:48.466-04:00Half a year in a roll {2}

I love anything nostalgic, so you can imagine how excited I was when my mom handed me a Yashica camera that my parents used to use when I was a baby. I never knew my parents were into photography, but apparently my dad used to shoot with a medium format! Sadly, he doesn't know what happened to it after we've moved so many times.

Similar to the other roll, this one stayed in the Yashica for about half a year as well. But, when I was taking it out last week, I accidentally opened the chassis halfway through winding the film and ruined a couple photos. I thought the whole roll might not turn out at all, but I was so relieved when the photo lab technician told me my total came to be $17.34 (if nothing came out I'd only need to pay $3+hst ), he must have thought I was weird when I presented myself with a big smile. Anyway that is why this post jumps from Christmas market to this spring's Jane's walk. You can see the first photo is marked by my mistake, but the imperfection makes it better, I think.Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04604406808454898811noreply@blogger.com0
