Natural Dyeing

naturally dyed

My natural dyeing class at the Workroom just ended on Monday and I came home with beautiful hand dyed fabrics. Dyeing used to seem so intimidating to me because of all the chemicals and procedures involved, but Julie just made it so easy. I don't understand most of the chemical reactions that happen in natural dyeing but I think I'm good at following recipes. It's kind of like cooking, you just need to know what ingredients to use. We also got to experiment with shibori, which I find so fascinating, since every piece comes out to be a total surprise.

When I have my apartment set up, I hope to sew these into summer shirts and dresses. I have so many ideas already.

Happy Friday+ weekend to you!

Ida: I used mostly grounded ones you buy in a store. These include Osage, Cochineal, logwood and indigo. The second piece of fabric from the top is the only one dyed with kitchen ingredient. It's onion skin.

Ida, Amanda, Alexandria: Thanks! I love that chair too! It's a chair named Heywoodite made in the 50s for schools. I love kijiji/Craigslist!

Julie, Maria, Studio Meez, Mdmslle, Jazzy E: Thank you! I had so much fun dyeing these, I'd like to do this more often!
